James ‘Jimmy’ Oduber – The UNESCO Convention on the Safe Guarding on Intangible Cultural Heritage in Aruba.

  1. Summary

In this presentation Oduber will explain the way the UNESCO Convention on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage is being implemented in Aruba. Aruba has been an associated member of UNESCO since 1986. Although the UNESCO National Commission of Aruba has been striving to implement the convention as of 2003, the year in which the convention was created, Aruba had to wait nine years until the Dutch Kingdom ratified the convention. Since then, the minister in charge of UNESCO affairs in Aruba installed a workgroup to give advice on the implemention of the Convention in Aruba and recently the Fundacion Herencia cultural inmaterial was installed and is the local NGO in charge of the execution of the Convention in Aruba.

Jimmy Oduber is of the Fundacion Herencia Cultural Inmaterial and Secretary General of the Aruba National Commission for UNESCO.

Luc Alofs – Creating Unity by Managing Diversity, the 2003 UNESCO Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

  1. Summary

The purpose of the 2003 UNESCO Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage is to foster diversity and thereby create tolerance between population groups. In his paper Luc Alofs elaborates that cultural heritage should not (only) be looked upon from a historical and essentialist perspective, but also from the inclusive perspectives of social cultural diversity and tolerance in society. Convention can contribute to interethnic understanding and recognition and nation building in Aruba.

Luc Alofs is president of the Fundacion Herencia Cultural Inmaterial and author of the Aruba Heritage Report (2004-2008, UNESCO National Commission in Aruba).
